It starts out in Scotland, with Edward the Longshanks ruling over it, a cruel pagan leader as the Scots say. Finally the Scots rebel, led by Wallace, his rebellion triggered by the death of someone close to him. His close confidantes are hilarious. The Irish man, his old best friend Hamish and his fiery father, are the best supporting characters I've seen in a long time. Funny and loyal. The performances of Edward Longshanks and Robert the Bruce are great, as with the Princess of Wales. Their awe/love/hate of Wallace all leads to a climatic ending, that inspires a raw spirit within you to rise up. Its powerful and chock full of emotion. The brawling part comes from the explicit violence. But in truth, that was how I would've imagined a movie like this being. Its skimps on nothing, throughout everything else it shows Scotland how it really was. Why should it skimp on the brutalities of war? Beheadings, slitting of throats, impaling, the list never ends. But it fits with what the movie is. Its a movie monument to the need of freedom.

Incitement movie in texas. This film is a re-creation of the life of Yigal Amir, the assassin of Yitzhak Rabin, from the time of the announcement of the 1st Oslo peace accord, to the actual deed. While Yigal was already a nationalist (he starts by being arrested at an anti-Oslo rally) various forces encouraged or abetted him towards assassination.
There is his mother, encouraging him to greatness, as per his name. There are rabbis who proclaim that Jewish law should supercede secular law, and also that Rabin is a "Persuer" and an "Informer" permitting him to be killed. There is a Likud / Bibi rally, where calls to kill Rabin go unchecked. There are girlfriends / potential brides, who just distance themselves from him but not report his thoughts to authorities. About the only person who comes off well is his father, who said that, if Rabin should be struck down, it should be by the hand of God and not of man.
I was at the world premiere (see: trivia) where the director said the film project was started 5 years ago, and it is just coincidental that it is coming out as populists hold hate-filled rallies.

Press alt + / to open this menu. "Come to Daddy" turned out to be so much different from what I imagined - and props for that. This is one of those movies that rejects genre classification, for Ant Timpson and Toby Harvard have compiled a variety of elements, emotions and oddities and have done it organically, no less. Furthermore, Elijah Wood & Stephen McHattie tops off this eccentric cocktail with sparkling performances.
A man in his mid-thirties, an urbanite (Elijah Wood) receives a letter of invitation from his father whom he hasn't seen in 30 years & so he journeys to his father's remote cabin by the sea. I had seen the trailer before, read an article or two, but little did I know what I thought will go on for 90 minutes went on only for about 30. The story twists and turns multiple times (from which there are 2 'major' turns) while also keeping a coherent and all-weaved-through emotional ground, consistency. My only complaint is the underwhelming revelation of the fact that Stephen McHattie is not there for the long run. I like the guy a lot. But, naturally, it didn't take away anything for "Come to Daddy" has what it takes to engage and entertain all throughout. Amusing characters, witty dialogue, pitch-black humor, pumped-up and gnarly action, certain and stable moral core. First half an hour, the son meeting the father, plays like a Tarantino movie, just throw in the kind of suspense and creepiness only the horror genre can provide. Next up is a man in a storm of confusion, demons and machinations & in the end we count the fates and enjoy the action. As for the audiovisual/aesthetical qualities, Come to Daddy" is shot and edited together tastefully, the technical side holds up to the rest of the goodies.
Keeping in my mind that this is Ant Timpson's directional debut, I'm excited to see what else is there to come. More than a solid start. "Come to Daddy" is a top-tier, highly creative, excellently performed indie flick, a dark comedy with the undertones of several other genres. My rating: 8/10.

Written and directed by Richard Stanley (his first film in 25 years, after he was infamously fired three days into production on his long-gestating dream project, The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)H.P. Lovecraft's 1927 short story "The Colour Out of Space" and takes a good stab at depicting one of Lovecraft's most oblique entities. Mixing humour and body horror (perhaps weighed a little too much towards humour) the film gives Nicolas Cage another opportunity to go full-Cage, and boy does he lean into it - this is the most ludicrous, histrionic, and borderline farcical performance he's given since Vampire's Kiss (1988), and how much latitude you give him may well determine your opinion of the movie.
Just outside the city of Arkham, MA (the fictitious setting of many Lovecraftian stories) Nathan Gardner (Cage) his wife Theresa (Joely RichardsonBrendan MeyerMadeleine ArthurJulian Hilliard) have moved into Nathan's deceased father's property, with Nathan embracing rural life by raising alpacas on the property's farm. On an otherwise normal night, the sky fills with pulsating light and a meteorite crashes onto the Gardners' land, and as time passes, the Gardners start to experience ever-more bizarre events - unnaturally localised lightning storms that seem to come from nowhere; huge fuchsia-like plants that seem to grow overnight; a horrific odour that only Nathan can smell; a gigantic purple mantis flying around; radios and the internet cutting out more than normal; the water turning strange colours; the family's dog, Lavinia's horse, and Nathan's alpacas starting to acting strangely; even time itself appears to be corrupted. And soon enough, the family members themselves begin to show signs of unnatural change.
After some basic narrative preamble and a contemplative sub-Terrence Malick-style voiceover, the film features one of the most inorganic expositionary scenes I've ever seen, as Nathan and Theresa stand on the porch, and spend a good five minutes telling each other things that they both already know. Thankfully though, the clunkiness of this opening isn't a sign of things to come, and one of the film's most consistent elements is the subtlety with which Stanley depicts the entity, or rather, doesn't depict it. Lovecraft felt that if humanity were ever to encounter real cosmic beings, they could be so unlike anything in our experience as to be impossible to describe, or even process in our minds, and one of his aims with "Colour" was to create an entity that doesn't conform to human understanding - hence the only description is by analogy, and even then, only in relation to a colour beyond the visual spectrum. With this in mind, Stanley wisely keeps everything as vague as possible - vibrant, modulating pulses of light that seem to be emanating from somewhere just outside the frame, vaguely-defined spatial distortions, colour manipulations with no obvious source, etc.
Important here is the colour itself, and instead of attempting to create the indescribable colour featured in the story, director of photography Steve Annis chooses to go the route of not settling for any one stable colour - every time we see the effects of the meteorite, the hue appears to be in a state of flux - so although we can say the colours are recognisable, they're never identifiable as any one specific colour, which, is probably the best choice the filmmakers could have made.
As we get into the third act, the film abandons all sense of restraint and goes completely insane, with the body horror which has threatened to break through from the earliest moments finally unleashed, foregrounding the exceptional work of special effects supervisor/creature designer Dan Martin. These scenes are heavily indebted to David Cronenberg, especially his earlier work such as Shivers (1975)Rabid (1977), and The Brood (1979), although the most obvious touchstone is Chris Walas's work on Cronenberg's masterpiece, The Fly (1986). A lot of Martin's creature design also seems inspired by the legendary work of Rob Bottin, and there's a direct visual quote of one of the best moments in John Carpenter's The Thing (1982).
It's also in the last act where Cage is turned loose, signalled by an epic meltdown when he discovers Benny hasn't closed the barn door and the alpacas have gotten out. From there, it's Nicolas Cage unrestrained. There is a problem with this, however. Full-Cage has been seen in films such as Vampire's Kiss, Face/Off (1997)The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)Mom and Dad (2017), and Mandy (2018), but each performance has felt fairly organic, never becoming self-conscious. In Colour, however, to an even greater extent than in the virtually unwatchable The Wicker Man (2006), Cage crosses into self-parody, with his performance having as much to do with people's preconceived notions of a Nicholas Cage performance as it does with finding the character. There are a couple of scenes here that seem to have little to do with legitimate character beats and more to do with Cage winking at the audience.
Which might be entertaining and all, but which doesn't serve the film especially well. For all its insanity, this is a relatively serious movie, but Cage's performance is so manic, that it affects everything around it. For example, after the aforementioned meltdown ( Don't you know how expensive those alpacas were. which just about fits with what we know of the character, as Nathan is walking away from Benny and Lavinia, he stops, turns, pauses, shouts "ALPACAS" pauses again, and then walks away. This got a huge laugh at the screening I attended, and it was undoubtedly funny. But does self-reflexive humour by the leading man help tell the story or even create the right tone? No, not in the slightest. In essence, this scene marks the point where the character ceases to be Nathan Gardner and becomes a version of Nicolas Cage.
The other characters all have a kind of internal logic to their crumbling sanity; the meteorite affects each of them differently, with their minds disintegrating in different, but consistent ways. With Nathan, however, Stanley seems unwilling, or unable, to establish the parameters by which his mind is breaking down, seemingly going for laughs rather than something more cogent.
This issue notwithstanding, I enjoyed Colour Out of Space a great deal. Stanley's return to the director's chair is to be admired for its restraint and how faithful it remains to the very tricky Lovecraftian original. The body-horror in the film's last act will appeal to fans of the grotesque, whilst others will take great pleasure from Cage's insanity, as narratively unjustified as it is. The film is ridiculous on many levels, but it's extremely well realised and well made, and is to be applauded for not trying to attach an explicit meaning to a story which avoids any kind of thematic specificity.

February 11, 2020 Review by James Lindorf From Director Drew Mylrea, Spy Intervention stars Drew Van Acker (Pretty Little Liars) as Corey Gage, the world’s greatest spy. While out a mission, Corey met the love of his life, Pam Grayson, played by Poppy Delevingne (Kingsman: The Golden Circle. ) Trading his life as a spy, Corey enters the world of domestic bliss, a steady 9-5, weekly trips to the hardware store, and lots of talk of having friends over. As the honeymoon phase is coming to an end, Corey’s old partner, Blake Anderson (Workaholics), comes to him with an offer to capture the villain who got away. Corey must choose between saving the world and saving his marriage. If he isn’t too rusty, maybe he can do both. Rounding out the cast are Brittany Furlan (We Are Your Friends), Max Silvestri (Table 19), Natasha Bassett (Hail, Caesar! ), Brian Sacca (The Wolf of Wall Street), Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), and Lane Garrison (Shooter). Spy Intervention will be available on major VOD platforms starting Valentine’s Day. Producer Sunil Perkash (Salt, Enchanted) isn’t a stranger to big-budget films where money can solve most of the problems that come up during production. Perkash and first-time feature-length Director Mylrea didn’t have that luxury or that burden on this film. When the amount of money dedicated to a project increases, so do the expectations. Not just about how well it will perform at the box office but how the film will look. Nothing but the latest and greatest special effects are expected for a 250-million-dollar movie like James Bond’s latest outing No Time to Die. When the team set out to design the look of Spy Intervention, they knew they would have a modest budget, and they wanted to have a plan. The settled on blending the modern with the classic in every aspect from set design to cinematography. The sets and props of the spy world are obvious fakes, but the way they are presented and how the cast interacts with them is the crucial factor. The actors all treat it like it is perfectly natural, and they are not played directly for laughs. Sure, when it looks like they are on the set of a play, using an obvious miniature or you swear the strings are still attached, it can be humorous. Still, it can also pull at the nostalgia strings tied to your affection for spy films of the 60s. The most significant change from Corey’s ordinary life to his spy mission is the aspect ratio that it is presented. Corey’s home life is shown in standard 16:9 ratio, which will fit your widescreen tv perfectly. His missions, however, are shown in 4:3, cutting off the edges like TV in the ’80s and ’90s. Mylrea and cinematographer Danny Grunes also played with the lighting and coloring of scenes for a little added flair. In a romantic spy comedy keeping the right tone falls heavily on the shoulders of the cast. Avy Kaufman was in charge of casting and was especially successful with the addition of Poppy Delevingne. Though she may not be as well known as her younger sister Cara, Poppy may be the superior actor. Poppy handles the comedic scenes well but excels in the film’s dramatic moments. You believe in the fear, anger, and self-doubt that she experiences as she begins to question Corey’s recent behavior. Drew Van Acker is probably best known for his role on the CW show Pretty Little Liars, which isn’t always known for stretching your acting ability. While he may not be as good as Poppy, he does handle himself well. Drew projects the image of a secret agent who would be more at home in the world of Kingsman with their attitude and comedic bend than he would be working with James Bond. Drew was at his best when he was sharing the screen with Poppy, which I good because it is the central relationship, but it does take away a bit from the spy scenes. Natasha Bassett, who plays Corey’s spy wife Alexandria, brought energy and a lot of charisma to her scenes that wanted more of every time she was off-screen. Drew Mylrea, along with writers Mark Famiglietti and Lane Garrison, did an excellent job walking the tightrope between heartfelt romantic story and a spy-themed action-comedy. While watching, you can’t help to compare it to movies like True Lies or This Means War, and while it may not have the budget of either of those projects, it does have heart, and it does have character. While it may not reach the peaks of True Lies, there are good odds that those who see Spy Intervention will want to introduce their friends and family to it, and it won’t be quickly forgotten.

Kilmov's 1985 film ' Idi i smotri' or the American title ' Come and See' does a extraordinary job of not only inviting the audience to witness the time of war in Soviet Russia but to understand and feel how it affected one through the eyes of a young boy named Florya(Sonny in English subtitles.
The film opens with a scene where a Partisan is yelling followed by Florya digging painstakingly on the ground for weapons with another boy. The day after, Partisans come to Florya's home and take him with them to start organizing for the Nazi confrontation, while the Florya's mother is left in tears. Soon after joining the Partisans to face the Nazi's, Florya is left behind, as well as a girl named Glasha.
Through the film, the audience is able to experience the brutality of human beings towards one another. At times it is hard to understand what is happening precisely, perhaps one of the reason is because there is not a lot of straight forward dialogue. For instance, I feel the movie instead reaches out to the audience through the use of graphic demonstrations of the plot rather than explanations from the characters.
One of the most crucial moments is when the Nazis moved forced villagers into a wooden church only to demolish it. Florya was one of many that were mixed into the crowds and fatefully fled when the Nazis gave mercy for those who did not have children. There is a scene where a woman was able to leave the wooden church but her baby was thrown carelessly back into the church.
Although towards the end of the film Florya barely speaks, one can define his emotions by his facial expressions. As his experience during the Soviet War progresses, so does his age. At the beginning of the film he looks healthy and around thirteen years old. By the end of the film, he looks as if he has aged twice his own age, but still had some sanity with the exception of his condition. When Florya meets Glasha again, they both look almost as if under psychological trauma and there is a sense of understanding through their silence.
In the scene where Florya's mother pleads the Partisans to not take her son to go fight and says that he is a good polite boy and would never hurt anybody. Florya took his revenge through art. In his revenge scene, which is considered to be the most memorable and powerful scene in the film, shows Florya shooting at a Adolf Hitler painting, which was carried earlier in the film by someone. Within every few seconds of him destroying the painting, there are flashback clips of dead bodies at the concentration camp, Hitler giving regards to a German boy, the Nazi party, and many other Hitler moments. As each of these images unwind, Florya viciously shoots the painting. He does not shoot when the image of Hitler as a baby in his mother's lap appears, which shows a kind of purity and innocence for which he protects. His little sisters and mother may be one of many personal reasons he wanted to join the Partisans. I feel he wanted to protect his family and he wanted to make sure his siblings were going to be able to have a future.
Come and See definitely sets the bar at being one of the most crucial, disturbing, and unforgettable films. Klimov allowed many of the rifle shots heard throughout the film to be real. Apparently, one of the bullets was only seven inches away from the head of the boy who played the character Florya. Klimov did this to give the film a more authentic feel within the set. With this extremely risky technique and the works of a brilliant director, the final product and outcome were all done precisely, leaving a long lasting impression on the audience as if they were there.
